FM Work Hours

Purpose

Facilities Management is committed to meet the operational needs of the university, by being available both during normal business hours and outside of normal business hours for planned events and emergencies. This is accomplished through effective scheduling and resource management.

Standard Operating Hours

Facilities Management's standard operating hours are from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.

Standard Work Hours

The standard work hours are 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, with a 1-hour (or approved ½ hour) lunch (meal) break. Administrative employees as well as the various maintenance shops and project management teams will complete their work during these standard work hours. Exceptions must be approved by line management.

  • Administrative employees
  • Engineering
  • Project Management
  • Front Office
  • Maintenance Shops
  • Warehouse

Grounds Work Hours

The work hours for the Grounds Shop are 6 am to 3 pm, Monday through Saturday, with a 1-hour (or approved ½ hour) lunch (meal) break. Starting early is safer and more productive as employees can complete their work during the cooler morning hours. Garbage pickup also begins early in the morning and requires employees to work on Saturdays.

FM Services Work Hours

FM Services work hours vary to meet the needs of the university, with a 1 hour (or approved ½ hour) lunch (meal) break. In order to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of our buildings with the least amount of disturbance to their occupants, lighter work is often completed throughout the day with deeper cleaning completed in the early morning and late-night hours. Set-up and break-down work for events also require varied hours throughout the day, night, and early morning hours.

Lunch (Meal) and Rest Breaks

Employees are given a 1-hour lunch (meal) break each day. Employees may receive approval from their supervisor to take a ½ hour lunch (meal) break). It may not be less than 30 minutes and must be taken within six hours from the start of the work day. In addition, employees are allowed (2) fifteen-minute paid rest breaks; the first taken during the first 4 hours of their work day, and the other taken during the last 4 hours of their work day. Employees may not shorten their work day by skipping lunch (meal) and rest breaks.

Devotional

Devotionals are held each Tuesday from 11 am – 12 pm, except during school breaks and the first and last weeks of school each semester. All employees are encouraged to attend the devotional in person, though the option to view the devotional online is also available.

  • Student employees may not work during devotional. Devotional attendance may not be counted as hours worked.
  • Non-student employees who attend devotional may count the time as hours worked. If an employee uses this time for personal matters, that time should not be counted as hours worked.

Completing Work During Work Hours

All employees are expected to complete their work during their scheduled work hours. Employees may not work extra hours in a day, intending to take off early at the end of the week.

On-Call Hours

Employees should minimize the number of hours spent outside of the standard working hours, even when they are on call. When responding to an on-call request, employees should do their best to mitigate the situation, and then return the following day (or business day, when appropriate) to complete the corrective work. It is the supervisor’s responsibility to make the appropriate work schedule adjustments to limit overtime and ensure their area is appropriately staffed throughout the week.

Overtime

Employees should minimize the number of overtime hours worked. Employees are responsible for keeping their supervisor informed of situations that may require overtime. The supervisor may choose to approve the overtime or assign another employee to the job. It is the supervisor’s responsibility to make the appropriate work schedule adjustments to limit overtime and ensure their area is appropriately staffed throughout the week.

Variations from Standard Work Hours

Employees may sometimes need to work outside of these standard work hours to support special events, respond to emergencies, or minimize disruption to university services, such as scheduled utility shutdowns. Supervisors are responsible for making the appropriate work schedule adjustments to limit overtime and ensure their area is appropriately staffed throughout the week.

Remote Work

The Facilities Management Department is responsible for the safety and functionality of all buildings and facilities on campus. Because of this, Facilities Management does not offer remote work. Prior written approval for any exceptions must be received by the Facilities Management Director and the President’s Council.
