Waste Disposal Services
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant waste disposal while promoting environmental responsibility, workplace cleanliness and the protection of health and safety.
Services Provided By:
Facilities Management
Provides waste disposal services, which also include the following:
- Pick up loose trash in the surrounding area.
- Clean and pressure wash the surrounding area as needed, at least once a month.
- Clean and pressure wash trash receptacles as needed, at least once a month.
- Purchase and maintain 2 garbage trucks and cover the costs for registration, safety check, mandatory vehicle licensing, CDL licensing, vehicle insurance, maintenance repairs, and the replacement of the trucks as needed.
- Purchase and maintain trash receptacles, replace as needed.
- Responsible for all liabilities to property and person.
- Cover the cost for all labor.
- Refuse locations are located in Kailua, Kalihi and Kapolei.
Services Provided To:
BYUH Academic Spaces
- Campus
- Special events
- Non-billable services
BYUH Housing
- Hales and TVA. Additional receptacles will be provided during check out periods to accommodate for additional trash
- Town houses
- Faculty homes located off-campus receive services through the City and County of Honolulu. These accounts are managed by Housing Operations.
- Pays a monthly service fee to BYUH.
Laie Hawaii Temple
Pays a monthly service fee to BYUH.
Polynesian Cultural Center
The only for-profit organization receiving waste removal services.
- Financially responsible for the entire tipping fee for the BYUH Garbage trucks on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, which will include trash from BYUH, PCC, and the Laie Hawaii Temple.
- There is no tipping fee on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday as religious entities are allowed to dump for free, with no tipping fee.
- Pays a monthly service fee to BYUH.
BYUH Food Services
Works directly with the City and County of Honolulu to manage waste removal.
Accounting
- The FM systems manager prepares the rates in October, to be approved by the FM director and the vice president of operations.
- Contracts are signed in November for the upcoming year.
- The FM systems manager will work with Financial Services to set up automatic billing.
- Garbage trucks are purchased and maintained using CNA funds.
- Fuel for garbage trucks is paid out of the Facilities Management Auxiliary Services Cost Center.
- Labor is paid out of the Facilities Management Auxiliary Services Cost Center.
- Additional services for items such as mattresses and tires are to be paid out of the Facilities Management Auxiliary Services Cost Center.
