Termites

Termites are attracted to wood, moisture, and untreated structural materials. In Hawaiʻi’s warm and humid climate, termite activity occurs year-round. They may enter through small cracks in foundations, walls, and utility openings. Even clean units can experience termite activity, as infestations are related to building materials, not food or sanitation.

Common Reasons

Termites are attracted to moisture, wood, and untreated or exposed structural materials, especially in warm and humid environments.

Signs of Termites

Signs of termites may include small piles that look like sawdust (termite droppings), hollow-sounding wood, bubbling or peeling paint, mud tubes along walls or foundations, and discarded wings near windows or doors.

How To Respond to Termites

If you suspect termites, submit a work order right away, as termite treatment requires licensed professionals and should not be handled with do-it-yourself chemical treatments.

Step 1: Reduce Moisture

Report leaking pipes, faucets, or roof issues promptly, and avoid overwatering plants near building foundations.

Step 2: Avoid Disturbing the Area

Disturbing termites can cause them to relocate and make professional treatment more difficult, so do not spray household cleaners or insecticides on suspected areas and do not break open wood or mud tubes.

Step 3: Prepare for Professional Treatment

Follow the instructions provided by Facilities Management staff, as you may be asked to move furniture away from walls or temporarily vacate the area depending on the treatment method.

Important Considerations

Termites are common in Hawaiʻi are a building maintenance issue—not a cleanliness issue. They do not spread disease and are not harmful to people directly, but they can cause structural damage over time if not treated. Early reporting is essential to protect the building and prevent more extensive repairs.

If you suspect termite activity, contact Facilities Maintenance immediately. Prompt action ensures safe and effective treatment.
