Cockroaches
Cockroaches are usually attracted by three main things: food, water, and shelter. In apartment buildings, they can easily travel between units through walls, pipes, vents, and shared hallways. Even if your space is clean, they may enter from a neighboring unit.
Common Reasons include:
- Food crumbs, grease, or uncovered trash
- Leaky pipes or standing water
- Clutter that provides hiding spots
- Gaps around doors, windows, or plumbing
- Nearby infestations in other units
How To Get Rid Of Cockroaches
Step 1: Eliminate Food Sources
- Store all food in sealed containers.
- Clean dishes, counters, stovetops, and floors daily.
- Take trash out nightly and use a tight-fitting lid.
Step 2: Remove Water Sources
- Fix leaky faucets and pipes.
- Wipe down sinks and tubs before bed.
- Avoid leaving standing water in dishes or plant trays.
Step 3: Declutter and Clean
- Reduce cardboard and paper piles (roaches love them).
- Vacuum and mop regularly.
- Clean behind appliances where crumbs collect.
Step 4: Seal Entry Points
- Look for visible gaps or openings in walls, especially around baseboards and plumbing. Submit a work request to have these gaps sealed.
- Look for large gaps under doors and submit a work request to have a door sweep installed if needed.
Step 5: Use Effective Treatments
- Sticky traps: Place in cabinets, under sinks, and behind appliances.
- Bait stations: Roaches carry the poison back to their nests and help eliminate others you may not see.
- For severe infestations, submit a work order for professional pest control.
Important Considerations
The most common cause of roach infestations is food left out on countertops, inside cabinets, on unwashed dishes and in trash cans. Clutter can also attract roaches by providing comfortable places to hide and nest. Following steps 1–3 plays an important role in resolving the issue, as treatments tend to be much more effective when these preventive measures are consistently maintained.
