Cane Spiders
Cane spiders (also called Huntsman spiders) are very common in Hawaii. They are large, fast-moving spiders that usually live outdoors but may enter apartments looking for:
Common Reasons Include:
- Food (they feed on cockroaches and other insects)
- Shelter from rain or heat
- Easy entry points like open windows, doors, vents, or gaps in walls
They do not build webs and are not aggressive, but their size can make them alarming. In most cases, seeing a cane spider means there may be other insects nearby that are attracting them.
How To Get Rid Of Cane Spiders
Step 1: Reduce Their Food Source
- Keep your apartment clean and free of roaches and other insects.
- Seal trash tightly and clean up crumbs promptly.
- Address any existing pest issues.
Step 2: Seal Entry Points
- Look for visible gaps or openings in walls, especially around baseboards and plumbing. Submit a work request to have these gaps sealed.
- Look for large gaps under doors and submit a work request to have a door sweep installed if needed.
Step 3: Reduce Outdoor Attraction
- Keep outdoor lights off when not needed (lights attract insects, which attract spiders).
- Avoid placing plants directly against entry doors or windows.
Important Considerations
Cane spiders are generally harmless and actually help control other pests. However, if sightings become frequent, it may indicate another insect problem that should be addressed.
