Ants
Ants are very common in Hawaii’s warm, humid climate. They enter apartments mainly in search of food, water, and shelter. Even small crumbs, sugary spills, or moisture can attract them. Because many buildings share walls and plumbing, ants can easily travel between units.
Common Reasons Include:
- Food crumbs or spills (especially sweets)
- Pet food left out
- Trash that isn’t sealed tightly
- Moisture from sinks, leaks, or damp areas
- Small cracks around windows, doors, or plumbing
- Nearby nests outside the building
How To Get Rid Of Ants
Residents are typically able to eliminate ants from their apartment by following the steps below. If ants persist, please submit a work order.
Step 1: Eliminate Food Sources
- Store all food in sealed containers.
- Clean dishes, counters, stovetops, and floors daily.
- Sweep and mop floors regularly
- Take trash out nightly and use a tight-fitting lid.
Step 2: Remove Water Sources
- Wipe down sinks and countertops before bed.
- Submit a work request to fix leaky faucets and pipes.
Step 3: Locate and Seal Entry Points
- Follow the ant trail to see where they’re coming from.
- Submit a work request to seal cracks and gaps with caulking.
Step 4: Use Effective Treatments
- Use ant gel baits or bait stations rather than sprays.
- Place bait near trails, but not directly on top of them.
- Avoid spraying ants when using bait, as this can prevent them from carrying poison back to the colony.
Important Considerations
Sprays may kill visible ants quickly, but bait is more effective because it targets the entire colony. If ants persist, submit a work order. Some infestations require coordinated treatment, especially in multi-unit buildings.
